Rant - Bo Burnham

Have you ever picked out the flaws within the bigger picture of something? The short song, “Rant”, by Bo Burnham contains a joyful and catchy beat while rapping about Burnham’s personal problems and concerns with Christianity and its more aggressive and hatred-filled side of its followers. Today’s world has managed a way to make simple things we do, such as giving a woman complete control of their body or being in a same-sex relationship to be controversial and debatable things. These important things deserve to be viewed as basic human rights, yet some people disagree. Claims are often made that the bible, or that God himself, disagrees and speaks out against homosexual relationships or things like abortion and female rights and empowerment. These are important things that anyone and everyone deserve the rights and ability to do, yet there are entire religions that preach messages of disagreement. “Rant” goes into the details of The Bible and some of those who follow it, and how being a follower of God has become a common excuse to carry out certain rude actions or acts of hate. The song continues to question and pull ironic pieces from this religion based on a book that’s filled with racism, homophobia, and other rules nobody follows in today’s world. I do feel a connection to both this song and the topics it speaks about. I began catholic church classes in first grade, continuing to take them until tenth grade when I was confirmed into the catholic church. During this entire process, I knew I didn’t believe a word they’ve been reading to me nor agreeing with how my church treated others. I don’t understand why I should be expected to spend time in a church that refuses to marry me to the one I love when they’ll marry plenty of others. I think the song “Rant” offers a comedic and ironic way to focus on some of the problems that are often produced within religion.
